Ruth Naomi Levin – Spectrum Healing Arts Centre
Workshop 2015 – Bio

Ruth Naomi Levin’s central passion is deepening our connection to health, wonder and grace through experiencing our bodies in motion. She is a movement facilitator, embodiment coach and professional dancer. She has been a kinesthetic (body-based) learner all her life, and a teacher within this world for nearly a decade. She is a graduate of the School of Toronto Dance Theatre’s Professional Training Program, holds an MFA in Choreography from York University. As well as professional training Ruth has deepened her understanding of humanity in motion through extensive practice in 5Rhythms, Kinetic Awareness, & Yoga. She is a Yoga Alliance Certified Yoga Teacher.

Ruth has the honour of being a member of renowned and gifted dancer, Margie Gillis’ Legacy Project, which has included opportunities to study and perform alongside Margie, as well as to assist in the transformative dance workshop ‘Dancing From the Inside Out’ that Ms. Gillis teaches at Hollyhock Retreat Centre. Ruth is currently a member of La Caravan Dance Theatre, based in Calgary, Alberta under the direction of the talented and visionary Maya Lewandowsky.

Alongside her practice of dance, Ruth has also cultivated a steady spiritual practice, working with a community, and lineage for over ten years. Her guides in this work are Doug Duncan Sensei and Catherine Pawasarat Sensei of Planet Dharma and the enlivened community that make up the Clear Sky Sangha.

She is grateful and glad for the opportunity to facilitate a process of transformation through movement at the Spectrum Healing Arts Centre.

Samhain – An Irish Celebration Of The End Of Summer

image1

This year Spectrum Healing Arts Centre will be celebrating a true Irish tradition known in Ireland as Samhain (pronounced Sowhen).

The root of the word – sam – means summer, while ‘fuin’ means end. And this signals the idea of a seasonal change rather than a notion of worship or ritual.

As millions of children and adults participate in the fun of Halloween on the night of October 31st few will be aware of its ancient Celtic roots in the Samhain festival.

image2

In Celtic Ireland about 2,000 years ago, Samhain was the division of the year between the lighter half (summer) and the darker half (winter). At Samhain the division between this world and the otherworld was at its thinnest, allowing spirits to pass through.

It is also known as the mystics or witches new year.

These traditions are still honoured today all over Ireland’s sacred sites. The entrance passage to the Mound of the Hostages on the Hill of Tara is aligned with the rising sun around Samhain. The Mound of the Hostages is 4,500 to 5000 years old, suggesting that Samhain was celebrated long before the first Celts arrived in Ireland about 2,500 years ago.

The Irish emigrated to America in great numbers during the 19th century especially around the 1840’s. With them they carried their Halloween traditions to America, where today it is one of the major holidays of the year. Through time, other traditions have blended into Halloween, for example the American harvest time tradition of carving pumpkins. Origin of carving pumpkins is an interesting tale.

In order to prevent unwelcome spirits entering their homes, the Celts created menacing faces out of turnips and left them on their doorsteps. Adding a lit candle to the hollowed out face gave added protection. In modern times, pumpkins are used. They’re considerably easier to carve, and a lot bigger, too, but they are not native to Ireland.

People wore costumes and masks to disguise themselves as harmful spirits and thus avoid harm. Bonfires and food played a large part in the festivities. Food was prepared for the living and the dead, food for the ancestors who were in no position it eat it, was ritually shared with the less well off
Household fires were extinguished and started again from the bonfire.

Interestingly, the Hindu Diwali (Divali, Deepavali) Festival known as the Festival of Lights occurs about the same time as Samhain. Diwali marks the Hindu New Year just as Samhain marks the Celtic New Year, could it be that Diwali and Samhain have a common root in antiquity?

They also deliberately made a lot of noise to unsettle the spirits and drive them away from their homes. The timid, however, would leave out food in their homes, or at the nearest hawthorn or whitethorn bush (where fairies were known to live), hoping that their generosity would appease the spirits.

Just as spells and incantations of witches were especially powerful at Samhain, so the night was believed to be full of portents of the future.
Here at Spectrum Healing Arts Centre we will begin the festivities on Saturday morning with mask and costume making, pumpkin carving and preparing traditional Irish food. In alignment with our lifestyle here at the SHAC, all the food will be organic and both vegetarian and non vegetarian food will be served.

In the evening we will dress in our costumes and masks and in true Druid fashion, we will ceremoniously light the bonfire and gather to do some sacred circle dancing.

We will bob for apples as in the old tradition of finding your mate. When you get an apple you peel it, letting the peel fall to the ground. The peel will reveal the letter of your intended love.

We will feed the little people and watch for fairies and unicorns to join us. There will be treats for everyone and I’m sure a few tricks will be played. This celebration is fun for all ages.

  • Cost: $50 + HST
  • Overnight stay an additional $20 + HST / night
  • Sunday Breakfast: $15 + HST

What to bring:
Items to decorate your mask and create your costume. We will provide the blank masks.

Raindrop Technique Using Essential Oils

serveimage

What is Raindrop Technique?

The Raindrop Technique is a method using essential oils that was developed by Dr Gary Young in the 1980s. It combines several modalities to bring balance and transformation. It supports body systems on a physical and emotionally level.

This technique involves applying therapeutic grade essential oils to the spine, neck and feet. The session lasts about an hour and a half. Benefits may last up to a week or more.

Gary found that combining several holistic techniques, described below, created a synergistic effect for the body. The three modalities that combine to form Raindrop Technique are:

Aromatherapy – Raindrop technique uses seven single essential oils, two blends and one essential oil massage blend during the session. It is congruent with the French application of aromatherapy where essential oils are applied NEAT (undiluted) to the body.

Vita Flex Technique – Vita Flex was brought to the US in the 1920s by Stanley Burroughs. It is an ancient Tibetan methodology meaning “vitality through the reflexes”. Its theory is based on the fact that slight pressure applied to the body creates an electric charge that is therapeutic to the body. This is known as piezoelectric.

Feather Stroking – This technique was  used by  Native Americans.

serveimage

How does Raindrop get its Name?

Essential oils are actually dropped from about 6 inches above your spine, simulating rain drops! It feels like a rain drop gently striking your spine, and it is very relaxing and comforting.

It is thought that the oils interact with a person’s electric field before even penetrating the skin of the back. Thereby, enhancing the electromagnetic properties of the oils as well. Amazing!

What is the Concept behind Feather Stroking?

In the 1980s Dr Gary Young worked with a Lakota elder named Wallace Black Elk. He learned that the Lakota people went to Canada to experience the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis (before there were border crossings and reservations). The Lakota people would raise their hands toward the light and breathe in the energy of the lights for transformational purposes.

Once the Lakota people could no longer cross the border, they created a stroking technique along the spine using a feather that simulated the energy of the Aurora Borealis. And this is the massage technique that was taught to Gary Young and is named feather stroking.

What are the Benefits of Raindrop Technique?

There are numerous benefits of the Raindrop Technique. Here are just a few:

Balance and Re-align the Energy Centers of the Body – The combination of techniques brings electrical and structural alignment to the body. The essential oil blend of Valor helps the body align and is often referred to as “chiropractor in the bottle”.

Non-Manipulative Technique – No manipulation as in chiropractic is performed. The oils help support the body to come back into balance by opening energy flow throughout the body.

Reduce Stress and Minor Anxiety – Not only can the oils enhance positive emotions such as joy and happiness, but they can also help us release negative emotions that are subconsciously stored on a cellular level. See the section on stress for more information!

Aid the Body’s Natural Response to Irritation and Injury – Thyme and Oregano support the immune, respiratory, nervous, and other body systems. They are strong antioxidants.

Eases Muscle Discomfort after Exercise – Muscles that are tense and in minor discomfort due to exercise will also benefit. Basil, Wintergreen, Marjoram, Cypress and Peppermint essential oils may reduce tension. See the section on oils for muscles for more information!

Support Healthy Immune System – Thyme and Oregano essential oils support a healthy immune system.

Emotional Well Being and Release – Essential oils effect the limbic system where emotions are stored in the “brain’s emotional computer”.

Help Detox the Body Systems – The oils being high in phenols may cleanse cellular receptor sites and enhance cleansing of the body.

Oils that are used in Raindrop Technique

Trauma Release Through Breath & Meditation

Trauma Release Through Breath & Meditation (TRBM) is built on new approach to trauma release. This profound and revolutionary system of body / breath therapy integrates deep connected breathing with especially designed conscious movement, body awareness techniques, bodywork and meditation. When skillfully combined in an integrated flow and safe environment these techniques result in releasing long held trauma from the body/mind.

This system is rooted in synergy of Wilhelm Reich’s body oriented therapeutic approach with soft and gentle techniques of Peter Levine’s Trauma Healing Modality.

TRBM enables us to experience the full range of sensations and emotions available to a human being. Furthermore, this approach expands our capacity to contain and support the free flow of our energy. As a result it restructures at a cellular level, supporting the full opening of the spine and releasing the chronic tension held in the nervous system.

Ultimately we transform into being increasingly present, conscious, and compassionate in our every day life. Through this work we let go of negative self image, chronic tension and physical pain. When opening up through this work step by step with great care and awareness we move into emotional freedom and re-gain free flowing graceful movement and unrestricted breathing. We open up to acceptance of ourself and others, celebrating life in it’s fullest.

Paneurhythmy – Dance Of The Soul

Paneurhythmy (pan-u-rith-mee), a system of meditative movement set to sacred music was created and introduced by the Bulgarian master, Peter Deunov, between 1932 and 1942. In his own words, he describes this all-encompassing science by saying, “…I have placed in your hands [Paneurhythmy], the key to my teaching. If you dance the Paneurhythmy correctly, the positive forces of Nature will flow through you and connect you with one another and connect all of you with the unbounded Cosmic Circle of Great Beings.”

Peter Deunov taught that this sacred dance of life unites heaven and earth through a series of twenty-eight easily learned movements in rhythmic circular walking dance. This sacred dance applies the principles of love, wisdom and truth and is a method of balancing the physical, mental and spiritual forces within man.

We will begin on Sunday August 30 at 4 PM with a meal. Dance will follow that evening and during the next day.
